The Mass is more than a social gathering, it is a participation in a Heavenly reality.
A participation in a Church much bigger than you and I.
Abstinence: Catholics over 14 years of age are bound to the obligation of abstinence. Abstinence is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Fridays of Lent. On days of abstinence, meat may not be used at all.
Fast: Catholics over 18 and up to the beginning of their 60th year are bound to the obligation of fasting. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the days of fasting.
On these days, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, enough to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal one full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed.
Prayer: We are called to devote ourselves more to prayer during Lent. Consider attending Daily Mass or praying a daily rosary.
Almsgiving: In addition to prayer and fasting, almsgiving is the third pillar of our Lenten practices. We are called to give more of our resources and goods and perform other acts of charity during Lent.
Penance: Lent is an opportunity for us to prepare ourselves spiritually for the Great Solemnity of Easter. Examining one's conscience and making a good confession are perfect ways to begin these preparations.
